Managing new digital offerings in visibility and security

Digital transformation in organizations embraces the use of new technologies such as IoT, Big Data, Machine Learning, Cloud, and Mobility. This paradigm shift places more importance on data security, wherever it is housed, in its transportation, and its use over simple perimeter protection. This change increases cybersecurity’s preponderance, which is now more important than ever.

Carlos Caldeira, Manager of the Cybersecurity Division at Oramix, states that “data protection must be a priority, so all the contexts where it is used, transported and maintained must be considered.”

“Attackers are always looking for a flaw that will allow them an attack. The increase in the attack surface, the increase in published services and microservices, as well as the automation of vulnerability collection and verification, makes it more difficult to protect networks, systems, and applications”, says the manager.

Many organizations are overwhelmed by the increasing scope and sophistication of today’s threats and do not have the expertise, processes or solutions to address them.

“Attackers are increasingly ingenious and are finding new ways to successfully perpetrate attacks. We see that most companies have been successfully attacked in the past, and many of them don’t know if that had ever happened to them”, reinforces Carlos Caldeira.

New digital technologies are reinventing how organizations operate, manage, and interact with others and individuals, from ERP and CRM to their management decisions. This automation and looped way of working is integrating innovation and agility; however, it may mean an increase in cybersecurity risks.

The increase in the value of information and its volume has never been as significant as it is today. In addition, endpoints are particularly more vulnerable when it comes to the use of IoT devices and their integration into organizations, where these, again, are not designed with security in mind.

“IoT devices extend from consumer products to critical infrastructure systems, leading to attacks increasing in frequency and complexity. These devices are being implemented in every industry and business, from financial services to healthcare, energy, or automotive”.

Carlos Caldeira emphasizes that the focus must be on data and applications. “The IT department is used to control access to the network and its systems. However, digital transformation is bringing the proliferation of new applications, devices, and new connected environments that a standard perimeter solution cannot defend.”

Just as data needs to be protected, security must be rethought and redesigned to keep up with today’s digital transformation and dynamic environments. Every connected device and every application must be constantly watched.

The business must have a way to gain visibility and ensure data-safeguarding principles, throughout the complex IoT and cloud integration migration process.

Threats, risks, and other security issues are now a joint concern of the business and technical departments (IT, OT or mixed) that, by bringing security as a pillar to this process, are providing the right digital transformation within the organization.
